A LIFE OF BREAKING BOXES
Before walking across the graduation stages at the University of Southern California and Harvard University, Azmera’s path there was anything but conventional.
Growing up low-income and housing insecure, she attended five elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools across three states and five public school districts.
At 15, amid those unstable circumstances, Azmera experienced a mental health crisis that led her to therapy. Those sessions introduced her to the transformative power of journaling—but also exposed her to the shame and stigma surrounding mental health.
That experience would ultimately shape the work she does today.
Her journey taught her a powerful lesson:
Your circumstances may shape where you begin, but they do not have to determine where you finish.
For more than 12 years, Azmera has brought this message to audiences across the country and around the world. She has reached more than 10,000 people through nearly 200 live events across 10+ states and five countries.
Her speaking experience spans an extraordinary range of settings, including New York Comic Con, London Comic Con, academic conferences, cultural festivals, colleges and universities, community-based organizations, jails, and juvenile centers.
Whether speaking to an intimate community workshop or a 1,000+ seat auditorium, Azmera connects with audiences through authentic storytelling, practical insight, and an unwavering belief in human potential.
Today, she partners with colleges, high schools, community organizations, and corporate leaders to help audiences challenge limiting beliefs, navigate adversity, and destigmatize mental health.
Her message is simple but powerful:
You are not defined by the boxes of cynicism, shame, or defeat that life tries to put you in.
With faith, hard work, and an unshakeable vision, the possibilities are endless.
It is never too late to pursue your passions.
Anyone can break the boxes—and level up.
BEYOND THE STAGE
Azmera’s speaking work is part of a larger interdisciplinary practice spanning scholarship, writing, poetry, music, teaching, community engagement, and embodied practice.
Her work is grounded in a belief that transformation does not happen in only one language.
Sometimes we need an idea.
Sometimes we need a story.
Sometimes we need a poem.
Sometimes we need movement.
And sometimes we simply need someone to remind us that the box was never the whole world.
